‘Freaks And Geeks’ reunion isn’t out of the question, says creator Paul Feig

Freaks and Geeks creator Paul Feig has raised hopes of a possible reunion for the show.

Although Freaks and Geeks only lasted one season due to low ratings, the show went on to become a cult classic and gained a loyal fan base throughout the years. Several of its stars also became major Hollywood actors, including James Franco, Seth Rogen and Jason Segel.

After bringing the show to screens in 1999-2000, Feig went on to direct major films such as Bridesmaids and Ghostbusters, while the show’s executive producer Judd Apatow later helmed the likes of Knocked Up and The 40-Year-Old Virgin.

Now, speaking to LadBible, Feig has discussed the prospect of more Freaks and Geeks in the future. “This September I believe is the 25th anniversary of the show,” he said. “I mean, people always want to do a sequel, reunion or something and I’m not a fan of those kind of things.

“I’ve rarely seen them be like ‘oh I’m so glad they did that’, [more often] it’s ‘Oh I kind of wish they didn’t do that.’”

“If I had a story, if some great idea came into my head, yeah, fine. Because also, the [actors] are still young – it is always sad when you do a reunion and they are all old. But they are all in their prime, so you never know.”

Back in 2019, Feig addressed the same topic, telling NME: “We’ve thought about it. I’d only do it if I had the world’s greatest idea for it, but my instinct is to sort of step away and not do it. But never say never.”

“It’s been talked about in the past,” he continued, “because I’ve made jokes in the past going ‘They’re all so famous that we can’t afford them’. They’ve said ‘No, we would do it’, but it has to be great. None of us want to make anything that’s not going to stand up to the quality of what we did before.”

In April last year, part of the cast reunited for a promotional ad for the fantasy film Dungeons and Dragons: Honour Among Thieves. The clip showed John Francis Daley – who co-directed the D&D film – alongside Samm Levine and Martin Starr, playing the game which their characters in the show were also known to play.

Feig is currently promoting his new film Jackpot!, an action comedy starring Awkwafina as Katie, a struggling actress who wins the lottery and John Cena as a protection agent trying to shield her from people trying to murder her.

In a three-star review of the film, NME wrote: “Awkwafina’s deadpan drollery dovetails neatly with Cena’s golden retriever energy and the climactic set-piece is genuinely exciting. There are also fun extended cameos from American Pie star Seann William Scott and Machine Gun Kelly, who gamely plays a very unserious fictionalised version of himself. Jackpot! might not quite live up to its title, but it’s definitely gratifying in the moment, a bit like winning £50 on a scratch card.”
