Phoebe Bridgers debuts three new songs at first solo show in three years in New Mexico

Phoebe Bridgers debuted new songs at her first show in three years in New Mexico last night – see all the info below.

The California singer-songwriter’s last solo live shows were as the opening act for Taylor Swift for three nights at New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium in May 2023, but she made her long-awaited return on Friday night (May 8) at the 400-capacity venue The Liberty in Roswell, New Mexico.

She debuted three new songs during the show, suggesting that a new album may be on its way, and fans in attendance each received an exclusive card, which it appears can be combined to make up the artwork for Bridgers’ next release.

Bridgers played several songs from her two solo albums, ‘Stranger In The Alps’ and ‘Punisher’, while the new songs have been described by those in attendance as “very sad folk” with harmonica arrangements.

There was no official album or release date announcement, but Bridgers did reportedly say that she saw the show as a “test” for whatever is set to come next. Fans have also noted that the show made use of aliens and UFO imagery, suggesting a possible theme for any new album. Lyrics included on new merchandise items also seem to support this idea.

Bridgers, who was wearing a Black Sabbath shirt, also stayed behind after the show to meet fans and sign autographs.

Since her last solo shows, Bridgers performed with Boygenius – the trio of Bridgers, Lucy Dacus and Julien Baker, though they announced they were going on hiatus after the completion of their critically acclaimed album ‘The Record’ in 2023, which was named our album of the year.

In other Bridgers news, rumours emerged last year that she might be set to appear in Primetime, an upcoming A24 film starring Robert Pattinson.

The movie reportedly follows a journalist – played by Pattinson – who ends up changing the landscape of television after taking on the undercover world of crime. It appears to have been inspired by the American reality series To Catch A Predator, and is due for release this September.

2020’s ‘Punisher’ scored Bridgers the fifth spot in NME‘s list of the best albums of the year, with its entry reading: “Introspective, with a sense of solitude woven throughout, ‘Punisher’ found Bridgers asserting herself as an individual force through self-production and pragmatic collaboration. The result: a multifaceted ode to embracing life’s oddities and living in the moment.”
