Is the third ’28 Years Later’ movie happening?

28 Years Later: The Bone Temple has come and gone in cinemas, but will the third film in the franchise’s revival ever happen? Get all the latest below.

The Bone Temple was a sequel to last year’s 28 Years Later, which itself served as a return to the universe that was set up by Danny Boyle’s original 28 Days Later in 2002.

Boyle and screenwriter Alex Garland both returned for 28 Years Later and stated plainly that they envisioned a new trilogy of films. The first two were filmed back-to-back, which explains the quick turnaround time for the release of The Bone Temple, but the third movie remains up in the air.

Nia DaCosta (HeddaThe MarvelsCandyman) stepped in for Boyle to direct The Bone Temple, while the ending of that film saw the long-awaited return of Cillian Murphy’s character Jim, the central protagonist of the 2002 original.

The new films both featured Ralph Fiennes as Dr. Ian Kelson, a former GP dedicated to memorialising the victims of the rage virus epidemic, as well as Jack O’Connell as the controversial Sir Lord Jimmy Crystal, and Alfie Williams as Spike, the teenager who sets out alone from the isolated community he grew up in.

In a four-star review of The Bone TempleNME wrote: “DaCosta and accomplished writer Alex Garland (WarfareEx MachinaCivil War) delight in exploring a desolate, gruesome and lawless Britain, ignored and forgotten by the rest of the world. Some jokers might say that it sounds like a documentary but the goings-on here wouldn’t happen in your local high street. Not this week, anyway.”

“With a uniformly impressive cast, spectacular scenes of carnage and the unshakeable feeling that anything could happen, this zombie franchise is as thrilling as it’s ever been. It’s well worth taking a trip to The Bone Temple.”

28 Years Later was also named as NME’s second best film of 2025.

Is the third 28 Years Later movie happening?

When 28 Years Later was first announced, Boyle and Garland stated their intention to make a trilogy, with Boyle later saying that the third film had not yet been greenlit by Sony and would only happen if the first two were successful.

Sony has not made any official confirmation about the third film yet, but in December, Deadline reported that the studio would be proceeding with it and Garland was finalising the script. In that report, it was strongly suggested that Boyle would be returning as director.

However, The Bone Temple has not proven to be as financially successful as Sony had hoped, taking $57.6million (£42.5million) against a budget of $63million (£46.5million). That compares to 28 Years Later’s $151.3million (£111.3million) box office take.

This has led to some fans expressing concern that Sony might pull the plug on the final film after all, but there still has been no official announcement either way.
