Jelly Roll has hosted a star-studded benefit concert for the first responders who tackled the Los Angeles wildfires – see footage below.
The huge show went down at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California in front of a crowd of 16,000, made up entirely of emergency services workers. Jelly Roll was joined on the bill by Lainey Wilson, Marshmello, Public Enemy, Nate Smith and Shinedown.
Speaking to the crowd, Jelly Roll said: “I want you to know that you are here tonight because you are a hero or you are a loved one of a hero. And I knew the moment I was watching this go down all the way in Tennessee in my house, I thought if I got a chance to go to California I was gonna play music to everyone who worked their ass off for the last two months trying to keep the rest of this place safe. Thank y’all for having me tonight — this is awesome!”
Watch footage from the show, which sees the country star performing his song ‘Son Of A Sinner’ and a cover of Lynyrd Skynyrd’s ‘Simple Man’ with Shinedown.
It comes just days after the major FireAid benefit concerts in Los Angeles, highlights of which included Joni Mitchell giving a rare public performance, Billie Eilish and Green Day teaming up for a live rendition of ‘Last Night On Earth’, and No Doubt reuniting to play some of their hits.
A big talking point from the show was when the surviving members of Nirvana made a surprise appearance, joined by St. Vincent, Kim Gordon, Joan Jett and Dave Grohl’s daughter Violet on vocals.
Lady Gaga also debuted a new song directly inspired by the wildfires at FireAid, titled ‘All I Need Is Time’. “I think we all need a lot of things right now, but I think something we may also need is time,” Gaga told the crowd before playing the jaunty piano-led song.
Many musicians stepped up to help out the affected communities in the aftermath of the fires. Beyoncé’s BeyGOOD foundation donated $2.5million to help to relief efforts. Paris Hilton also launched a fund for families displaced by the fires, pledging $100,000 and promised to match up to $100,000 in donations. Dave Grohl also spent his birthday making meals for families that had been affected.
Jelly Roll, meanwhile, is set to be included in the line-up for Saturday Night Live‘s SNL 50: The Homecoming Concert on February 14, alongside the likes of Backstreet Boys, Bad Bunny, Brandi Carlile, Chris Martin, David Byrne, Jack White, Lady Gaga, Miley Cyrus, Post Malone and Robyn.
