The first official trailer for 28 Years Later has finally been shared and many fans fear that Cillian Murphy‘s character may have come to a sorry end.
It was previously confirmed that Murphy, who played bicycle courier Jim in the first movie in the series 28 Days Later, would be returning for the current sequel “in a surprising way and in a way that grows [the character]”.
Although it has not been confirmed, one of the zombies in the trailer bore a striking resemblance to the Oscar winner.
Fans have also been speculating with one writing: “I swear to god, this better not be Jim in #28YearsLater because if it is you ruined my excitement for Cillian’s return to the franchise by infecting him.”
Another added: “Either Cillian Murphy is having fun with a double role or Jim does not have a happy ending in his fate.”

Murphy’s name is absent from promotional posters for the latest film, although he is credited as executive producer on the Sony Pictures website.
At one point in the trailer, some graffiti is seen on what looks like a farm dwelling with the words: “Behold he is coming with the clouds” – a verse from chapter one of the Bible’s book of Revelation, with “Jimmy” scrawled next to it in white paint, which could be a reference to Murphy’s character.
Later he is seen looming behind Jodie Comer‘s character.
Speaking to NME in 2022 about a potential return to the franchise, Murphy said: “I think there’s a problem with that, in that I’m 20 years older… but every time I do bump into Danny or Alex I always mention it. Because I showed it to my kids recently, some Halloween about four or five years ago, and they loved it. It really stands up, which is amazing for a film that’s 20 years old. So yeah, I love the idea and it’s very appealing to me.”
If the zombie does turn out to be Murphy, there’s still the potential for his character to appear in flashback scenes in Danny Boyle’s highly anticipated sequel, which is the first in a new trilogy.
As previously confirmed Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Ralph Fiennes all star in 28 Years Later, and all of them feature in the trailer.
Jack O’Connell also has a supporting role in the new movie, which is part of a new trilogy spearheaded by Boyle and Alex Garland.
The film’s official synopsis reads (via Variety): “It’s been almost three decades since the rage virus escaped a biological weapons laboratory, and now, still in a ruthlessly enforced quarantine, some have found ways to exist amidst the infected.
“One such group of survivors lives on a small island connected to the mainland by a single, heavily-defended causeway. When one of the group leaves the island on a mission into the dark heart of the mainland, he discovers secrets, wonders and horrors that have mutated not only the infected but other survivors as well.”
The film has been shot back-to-back with 28 Years Later II: The Bone Temple, the second film in the trilogy, which is directed by Candyman and The Marvels director Nia DaCosta.
28 Years Later will be released on June 20, 2025.
